Billy Crystal: Please welcome Buster Poindexter [solo persona of David Johansen of New York Dolls} and the one and only Little Richard!
Buster Poindexter: [Little Richard is staring at his hair] What?
Little Richard: I used to wear my hair like that. They take everything I get. They take it from me.
Buster Poindexter: Whooh!
Little Richard: He can’t get that though!
Buster Poindexter: Alright, now, the nominees are …
Little Richard: Wait a minute. Look at the hair. I used to hide easter eggs in mine. Look at it
Buster Poindexter: Now …? [wanting to start]
Little Richard: Shut up.
Buster Poindexter: The nominees for the best new artists are ...Breakfast Club. Cutting Crew. Terrence Trent D'Arby, Swing Out Sister and Jody Watley
Little Richard: [opens envelope] Are you all sure you want me to say that? I didn't have nothing to say. I thought I wasn't going to say nothing.
And the best new artist is ... me! I have never received nothing. Y'all never gave me no Grammy. And I've been singing for years! I am the architect of rock n roll and they never gave me nothin’! And I am the originator, and I still say 'waaaaaaaaah'.
[steadies himself] And the winner is ... still me. Good morning. I had to get that in. Being a brown Jew from Georgia, I had to tell it too. [to Poindexter] Shuddup. [Opens envelope and giggles] Wooooaaaa! The winner really is me!
Buster Poindexter: Richard. Richard. Shut up.
Little Richard: And the winner is … Jody Watley!
Jody Watley: Oh gosh. I am going to try not to cry, but I'd like to thank MCA records everybody at MCA. My manager Bennett Freed. Thank God. Thank my producers. Andre Simone. Bernard Edwards. Pat Leonard. My video directors, Brian Grant, Dominic Senna, my publicist, Gloria Boyce, Cindy Friedman, Lee Phillips, my attorney ... just everybody for believing in me and supporting me when a lot of people didn't. Thank you!
