Darcy Moore: 'This game's about so much more than the four points', ANZAC Day post match - 2023

June 7, 2023

25 April 2023, Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne, Australia

First of all, I want to give a massive thank you to the 95,000 fans who are here - record-breaking crowd

No matter whether you wear the black and white stripes or the red sash, this game’s about so much more than the four points. So, you turning up today and showing your support means a lot and we’re incredibly proud to play our part in this game.

To Essendon, both (stand-in skipper) Andrew (McGrath) and the team, as well as the broader club, thank you so much for making this event what it is.

It means a lot to us that we can come together with your football club and commemorate the sacrifice of not just the Anzacs, but all service men and women who have served Australia all around the world. So, thank you to the Essendon Football Club.

I want to thank and mention all men and women who are serving our country’s interests both at home and abroad in war and in peacekeeping operations, it means a lot to me and the team and the whole club that we can commemorate your service and your sacrifice today by doing what we do. So, thank you for your service.

To the veterans - there are over 600,000 veterans in this country who have returned from service - we also extend our thanks to you for your sacrifice and we hope that again, doing what we do today somehow honours your legacy and what you’ve done for our country. So, thank you to those 600,000 veterans as well.

And then finally to the families of those serving and those veterans: too often, your stories go untold and, on behalf of the Collingwood footy club, (I) just want to acknowledge the pain of war that runs through so many families across this country.

So, it’s a real honour for us to run out here and play our game in honour of you and your service. So, to the families of those who have served, thank you so much for your service. Thank you.

Donald Bradman: 'We shall endeavour to act as thorough gentlemen", Eve of departure - 1938

March 18, 2022

7 March 1938, Melbourne, Australia

I would like to thank you very, very much indeed for the kind words which you have said to welcome us here today, and to wish us godspeed and I would like to thank all of you for the very hearty manner and obviously sincere manner in which you drank the toast.

As I look around me, I can see some ex-Australian XI captains. Well, it won't be very long before I'm also down there amongst the tables, but I wish just at this moment in front of this large gathering, that I could change places with them immediately.

It is a very great honour to us indeed, that you should honour us by turning up in such great numbers today, We are going away on a mission, which after all is only a game of sport, but by the wonderful interest and enthusiasm which is being displayed, it is obvious that the public of Australia regard it as being something much more important than a mere game.

Last night on board the boat, we had a very good evening. I hear some of the players start to laugh quietly, so I won't go into details about it. In addition, we've had the pleasure of the company of that dear old gentleman and scorer, Mr. Fox.

He said he had great difficulty in keeping up to time once or twice, but it couldn't have had much effect on him because last night on board that ship, he confided to me. I dunno whether I should tell you, I suppose it'll be all right, that he had his first dance for 45 years. Well, if it was his first dance for 45 years, then I regret to say that he has been keeping that treat from the ladies all this time.

There is just one little touch of sadness about our departure from Melbourne. And that is that here in Victoria, you have some very, very excellent cricketers who narrowly missed selection in the Australian team.

Now the selectors are very human people. They're not given credit for being human of course! Nevertheless, they are and they share the trials and the disappointments of the players. We are extremely disappointed that certain players could not find room in the 16. But I want to say that I personally have been very touched by the charming manner in which those players have taken their omission. It shows the true cricketing spirit, and they have realised of course that if the selectors acted according to sentiment, instead of according to their judgement, they would not be worthy of holding the position of selectors.

Now I'm sure I've kept you all too long, but I know that you're going to follow our doings with the greatest interest on the other side of the world. You want to get out all those rusty old broken valves so there won't be any breakdowns at about three o'clock in the morning, and you'll have to rush over in your pyjamas to your next door neighbour's place. But one thing you may rest assured, and that is that wherever we go, we shall not forget that in addition to being your cricket representatives, we are representative of this country as citizens and on all possible occasions, we endeavour do act as thorough gentlemen,

Thank you very much.

Kim Hughes ' I have informed the Australian Cricket Board of my decision to stand down', resignation as captain - 1984

November 30, 2021

27 November 1984, Brisbane, Australia

The constant innuendo and speculation from former players and certain sections of the media over the last four or five years has...

In the interests of the team, Australian cricket and myself, I have informed the Australian Cricket Board of my decision to stand down. . .”

At this stage, an emotional Hughes broke down, stood up and left the players’ dining room, motioning to team manager and friend Bob Merriman to take over.

Steve Smith:'It was a failure of leadership, of my leadership' Apology following ball tampering - 2018

June 16, 2020

29 March 2018, Sydney Airport, Sydney, Australia

Good evening, thanks for coming, appreciate it. To all of my teammates, to fans of cricket all over the world, and to all Australians who are disappointed and angry – I'm sorry. What happened in Cape Town has already been laid out by Cricket Australia. Tonight I want to make clear as captain of the Australian Cricket Team, I take full responsibility. I made a serious error of judgement, and I now understand the consequences. It was a failure of leadership – of my leadership. I'll do everything I can to make up for my mistake and the damage it's caused. If any good can come of this, it's that it can be a lesson to others, and I hope I can be a force for change.

I know I'll regret this for the rest of my life; I'm absolutely gutted. I hope in time I can earn back respect and forgiveness, I've been so privileged and honoured to represent my country and captain the Australian cricket team. Cricket is the greatest game in the world. It's been my life, and I hope it can be again. I'm sorry and I'm absolutely devastated. I'll take some questions.

Joe Connolly: 'People of Galway, we love you!', All Ireland Hurling Final - 1980

May 8, 2020

7 September 1980, Dublin, Ireland

Delivered in Gaelic:

“Ach freisin caithfimid cuimhneamh ar dhaoine i Sasana, i Meiriceá, ar fuaid na tíre. Agus tá said, b’fhéidir, ag caoineadh anois i láthair.”

Translated:

People of Galway, after seven and fifty years, the All Ireland title is back in Galway. It is a great honour for me, my friends, to accept this trophy on behalf of the entire team. Today is a great day to be a Galwegian. There are people over in Galway with joy in their hearts, but also we must remember (Galway) people in England, in America, all over the country and maybe they are crying at right now. I would like to thank the Limerick team for the wonderful game they gave us today. People of Galway, we love you!"

The song sung by Galway’s Joe McDonagh is ‘The West’s Awake’

Paul O'Connell: 'I want them standing back thinking what the fuck is going on here?' Lions captain, pre game - 2007

January 4, 2017

11 February 2007, Ireland v France Six Nations, Ireland

If someone’s walking, if someone isn’t filling a gap, you get on his case, you say it to him. If I’m fucking walking, I want to hear it.

Listen to me, listen to me. I want them standing back thinking what the fuck is going on here? Not for the first five minutes, every fucking minute of the game.

Fucking manic aggression.

Did you scare anyone? Did you fucking put the fear of God into anyone?

Ted Whitten: 'You’ve got to show me all the guts and the determination you’ve got in your body', Last game address - 1970

September 25, 2016

2 May 1970, Whitten Oval, Footscray, Melbounre, Australia

This was Ted Whitten's last game as a player, Rnd 5 v Hawthorn, 1970. The Dogs held on to win by 3 points. Whitten later said, 'I cried, but you couldn't tell because it was raining'.

Provided we control the rucks and the air like we were doing, we’ve got a real chance.

In that quarter, you let the rucks get on top us a little, particularly from the centre bounce, and around the ground, which we can’t afford to do.

You had them in your hand, and you’ve let em out.

Now we’ve got to get them back in there and close it up.

They played attacking football, we went negative in that quarter.

And you can’t afford to. I want attacking football all the time.

And providing you had a # in that quarter, we had a real chance of winning it in that quarter.

Now we have our backs against the wall we’ve got to fight and fight hard.

It’s going to be a do or die effort. It’s going to be a determined #.

You’ve got to show me all the guts and the determination you’ve got in your body.

You’ve got to inspire me with this last quarter finish.

You’ve been in front all day and you’ve got to stay there.

Are you going to sit there ... or .... [growling player response]

Bob Murphy: 'Long may we serve the game that at times let us fly', AFL Life Member induction -2016

March 19, 2016

17 March 2016, Etihad Stadium, Melbourne, Australia

I have long wondered if more books would have been written about Australian Rules Football if Mike Brady hadn’t penned the song ‘Up There Cazaly’.

In one succinct line he captured the whole damn thing, ‘there are days where you could give it up, and there are days where you could fly’

A love of football is not always an easy love – even as we gather here tonight basking in the optimistic new season and the glory it might bring, we all know that there will be a few potholes along the trail.

In the beginning though the love of the game is free, light and full of fun.

For me it started with kicking the ball with my dad and brother – and if they weren’t around kicking the ball to myself.

Reading the bounce of the ball as it hit the power lines overhead and fell back to the bitumen.

A child’s imagination is boundless but for me the magnetic pull of the crowd was too much to resist.

Like many of the men standing up there with me tonight the schoolyard is where the dreams of becoming a proper footballer came into a sharper focus.

My primary school didn’t have an oval, in fact we barely had any grass at all, what we had was a car park with loose gravel.

As was custom at my school, play wouldn’t start until teams were picked – each boy or girl that wanted to play would line up with their backs against the red brick wall.

Captains were nominated and the brutality of the schoolyard would bare its teeth.

One by one players were picked until no one was left, then, the ball would be hoisted in the air to commence play – that’s when I got the bug.

That moment will be different to the rest of the inductees but if you ask them, and you should, there would be some good stories to be told.

A love of the game is one thing, but what does it all mean.

The pull of the crowd, the desire to stand on the wall to be picked, the exhilaration of running out with a swarm of teammates just with the expression of wanting to win or it could be about something much bigger.

It might just be that we want to belong to something.

It is my great honour tonight to speak on behalf of this year’s group of AFL life members.

Like a grand oil painting these inductees have brought different shades to the game with their talent, character and service.

Doctors, administrators, umpires, superstars and lowly half back flankers.

As has been done in the past on this night I was tempted to single out each one and sketch a portrait of them with a paragraph or two of my own.

But, are a few words enough?

After musing about the vision of Bill Kelty, the integrity of Matt Stevic, the grace of Shaun Burgoyne or the chiseled cheekbones of Scott Thompson I’ve decided to keep this year’s inductees together as one – a beautiful mish-mash of colours and textures.

Paul Chapman, Shaun Burgoyne, Brendon Goddard, Scott Jeffery, Chris Judd, Justin Leppitsch, James Kelly, Stephen Milne, Sam Mitchell, Drew Petrie, Matt Stevic, Scott Thompson, Dr Hugh Seward, Geoff Walsh and Bill Kelty.

If this were to be a painting on the wall, perhaps a landscape of the Australian bush it would surely have a river running through it that represents our common thread – a deep love for the game, the spirit that it’s played in and the reverence we hold for those that have gone before us.

If I was the last inductee picked by the AFL this year that would make me the 250th AFL life member.

What an art gallery that would be to wander through and sit in front of for a while.

These last couple of months have provided an opportunity to ponder the enormity of the honour.

When it comes to matters of football and ceremony I often defer to my Bulldog hero John Schultz, he himself an AFL life member.

He took me aside in the change rooms just last week and told me in his gentle way that the honour will mean more and more to me the older I get.

It already means a lot.

A life in footy means that time and again we put our backs to the red brick wall, hoping to be picked to play, to be part of something bigger than ourselves.

Perhaps never for once thinking that the game might eventually pick us – it doesn’t get much bigger than that.

On behalf of this fine group of men I accept the game’s invitation to join the blessed group of life members.

Long may we serve the game that at times let us fly, or at least feel like we could.
